General Harvest Techniques
What are two kinds of harvests?
- Full/Total harvest – where the entire plant is cut at the base and harvested.
- Progressive harvest – only specific parts of the plant are cut and removed (e.g., leaves or flowers), while the plant remains alive for later rounds of progressive harvesting.
How should you harvest a basil plant?
Basil should be harvested from the top down. Most of the time one will trim off the top third by cutting the main stem above the growth node (location where new branches sprout from) beginning with the center branch/stem (later can also cut side branches if necessary).
How should you harvest a thyme or mint plant?
Mint or thyme should be harvested just above any growth node, this will increase bushing and ensure a constant supply of tasty leaves. You can also pick the individual leaves as you need them.
